Colchester has a very long history.

  • It is the first recorded town in British history (mentioned by Pliny the Elder in his Historia Naturalis, AD77)
  • It was the first Roman settlement in Britain: Claudius made the town his capital in Britain in AD43, and called it Camulodunum.
  • In AD61, Colchester was attacked and practically destroyed by the Celtic warrior queen Boudicca.
  • When the Normans invaded England in 1066, a castle was built in Colchester on the site of the old Roman temple. It still stands, and is one of the best-preserved Norman castles in the country.
  • In 1648, Colchester played an important part in the English Civil War. The Parliamentary army, led by Thomas Fairfax, attacked the Royalist army, who had taken the town. Eventually, the Royalists were defeated.
