About I.L.H.

International Language Holidays is the junior summer programme of Colchester English Study Centre. All programmes are accredited by the British Council. With twenty years' experience of organising Young Learners' courses, ILH can guarantee a safe and supervised learning environment for all our students. We take care of everything from the first day to the last, making sure that students are free to learn English in a safe and relaxed atmosphere. Learning with ILH allows students to improve their English whilst enjoying a range of interesting activities and excursions. Our centres are located in some of the most beautiful parts of the east of England, not far from London and Cambridge. Whether staying in a college or with a family, students are sure to make friends from all over the world. Students, parents and teachers can be sure that registering with ILH will ensure the very best in English language holidays.

Care and supervision

In our residential centres, staff care for our students 24 hours a day. There is full medical support as needed. Our host families in our homestay centres are carefully selected by our accommodation officers and offer constant care, support and supervision. All students are given emergency badges with a range of 24 hour emergency telephone numbers for immediate help. Excursions are carefully supervised. Our couriers at London airports carry large International Language Holidays signs and are provided with mobile phones for easy communication when welcoming students on our residential programmes. Before each course, we send detailed information booklets about our centres and offer useful advice on such matters as what clothes to bring and how much pocket money students need. In our residential centres, all pocket money is looked after by the course directors. Our specially appointed house parents constantly check the welfare of those in their care. Staff student ratios are low to ensure supervision and safety.

Residential courses

Every boarding house in the school is supervised by a house parent, and members of staff sleep in the same boarding house as the students, who sleep in dormitory accommodation which is simple but comfortable, furnished with bed, desk, chairs, and wardrobes.    We provide all the facilities students are likely to need, including a laundry service. Clothes need to be carefully marked for this, and students need to bring towels with them to our residential centres.   All meals are provided by us; learners eat with each other in the school dining hall. There is a choice of menu, with both hot and cold dishes, and a range of traditional English and international food to please every taste.

Living with a family

Our host families are carefully selected by our accommodation officers and live within easy reach of the study centres. Students can sleep in twin or single rooms, full board. We do not place students with the same mother tongue in the same family, unless requested. The family provides all meals and will also make a packed lunch during the week. They will carry out basic laundry and make our students feel very much part of the family. Learners receive information about the host family in good time before they arrive so that they can write to them and introduce themselves. Living with a family is a very important part of a homestay ILH holiday.
