Guide to Colchester

Colchester is England's oldest town. Located in the beautiful Essex countryside, it is only 20 minutes from the sea and only 45 minutes by train from the centre of London.

Colchester was the first Roman city in England. A thousand years later, William the Conqueror built a castle on the site of the Roman temple. Colchester was also the site of the famous battle between the warrior queen Boudica and the Romans (AD 61), and of a major siege in the English Civil War (1648).

Colchester English Study Centre is only 5 minutes' walk from the town centre, where there is a shopping centre, as well as boutiques and cafes. There is also the Mercury Theatre, the Odeon six-screen cinema, and the University of Essex theatre. The town also has a large number of modern sports centres and an exciting night life. There is also the famous Colchester Zoo.               Colchester photos >>>
